Transferring Google Files

TRANSFERRING AND EXPORTING YOUR GMAIL, DRIVE FILES, AND OTHER GOOGLE DATA

Copying and transferring your Highland email and My Drive files to a personal Google account takes only a few steps when you use Google’s transfer tool.

Access Google's transfer tool from your Google Account profile page for your Highland account.

Important Considerations Before You Begin

Storage Amounts: Your Highland account has had unlimited storage but a personal Google account is limited to 15 GB. You may have to do some clean-up or purchase more space from Google. To view details on your storage usage, navigate to Google Drive Storage within your Google Drive to see the current storage used for your Gmail, Drive, and Photos.

Transfer Ownership: You will want to transfer ownership of files that belong to Highland or others by moving them to Shared Drives. Files that remain in just your My Drive will no longer be accessible to others with whom you shared them after your account expires. Note: Files you created in Shared Drives are already available to members of the Shared Drive. Make sure that someone else has Manager permissions of each Shared Drive so someone else will be able to manage the files after you leave.

Processing Time: If you have a large amount of data, the processes may take up to several days to complete according to Google Support. Once you initiate the transfer or download, you will be able to continue to do your work and even log out. However, the new files may not be available for some period of time. Plan accordingly.

Shared with me: Files shared with you are not part of the Google transfer since you are not the owner. You will have to manually download those files and folders to your computer or storage device.

COPY AND TRANSFER YOUR GMAIL AND DRIVE FILES TO A PERSONAL GOOGLE ACCOUNT

To transfer your Highland mail and Google Drive files that you own to a personal Google account, you can use the Google transfer service available from your Google account dashboard.

This feature will automatically transfer your Highland Gmail and Drive files you own and upload them to your personal Google account. If you do not have a personal account you can create one for free.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you start the process of migrating your Highland account data to your personal account, please open an incognito/private browsing window or use a different browser than you normally use. This will help to ensure the transfer will start.

Reminder: Remember to transfer ownership of any files and folders that should belong to someone else after you leave.

To access the Google Transfer tool:

  1. In a private/incognito browser window or a different browser, log in to your Highland Gmail account.

  2. Access the tool from myaccount.google.com. Or, from the upper right corner of the window, select the Google Account icon and then select  Manage your Google Account.

  3. From the home page, select Start transfer under Transfer your content. Complete the steps:

    • Enter a destination account

    • Verify your destination account

    • Select the content to copy and transfer.

  4. Be patient. According to Google Support, the processes may take up to several days to complete, particularly if you have a lot of data to transfer.
