Highland Community Members, In order to recognize our men and women who served our country, we would like to construct a veteran's memorial wall in our school building. Grant Hying, a 2020 graduate, as part of his senior exit project, designed this memorial with the mentorship of Highland Alum, Theresa Aide. We hope that this wall will be a constant reminder for all of our students currently and for years to come of the huge sacrifice all the men and women who served our country made and continue to make to keep our country free. If you would like to donate to the construction of the wall please send a check payable to Highland Community Schools- Veterans Wall. Any donation toward this cause will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, and please let me know if you have any questions, Josh Tarrell

ATTENTION CARDINAL ATHLETICS FANS: Last week, the WIAA shared its Guidance for Summer Activities as a living document that will change as conditions change. The document can be found on their website wiaawi.org. We encourage to you take a look. In addition, the Highland Athletic Staff continues to work with administration, the school board, the Department of Public Instruction, the Department of Health Services, the WIAA, and other local agencies to develop a plan to increase student participation in organized physical activities yet this summer. Our goal is to share more detailed information with families later this week. We will be looking for student and parent input at that time. The goal for possible summer contact is to allow students to participate in activities where it can be done safely. As always, any sessions are voluntary and will not be mandated. Please check your email for more updates. #cardinalpride #HCScardinals

HAPPY 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL! That's right, we've officially been in school for 100 days! The 100th day of school is a big day for lower elementary students. They enjoyed dressing like they were 100 years old, counting 100 objects, writing 100 words, and many other hands-on activities. But perhaps the highlight of the day is when Zero the Hero comes to visit! He sang a song with kindergarten students, handed out books and popped into a few other classrooms. He even took time to help the janitors do a little post-lunch cleaning :) We are so proud of all of our students who are officially 100 days smarter! #cardinalpride #HCScardinals

Can You Spell “Sibling Rivalry?” Highland students in grades 4 - 8 recently held a school spelling bee. Each classroom held contests to choose two spelling representatives and an alternate: Grade 4: Samuel Biba and Jordan Verheyen. Alternate: Ava Michek Grade 5: Julianne Washa and Marissa Biba. Alternate: Milena Straka Grade 6: Hailee Kahout and Logan Washa. Alternate: Aaliya Soto Wadel Grade 7: Aiden Gates and Kate Tarrell. Alternate: Storm Gerhart. Grade 8: Lializ Thao and Thomas John Hermansen. Alternate: Danette Meissner. Those ten spellers competed on Tuesday, January 21 and went over 19 rounds to narrow down our school champion! You know how it is when you’re doing something you love and your little sister, or big brother, has to get involved? Well our top two spellers can relate, they were Logan and Julianne Washa. Little sister Julianne bested Logan and was crowned Spelling Bee Champion! Last year Julianne was our school’s runner-up and took her spelling show on the road all the way to Washington, D.C. Julianne and Logan will compete on January 27 at the East Sectional Bee.

This is what the 6th grade classroom looked like today. Fishing, fire building, shelter building, and first aid skills to last a lifetime! It doesn't get better than this. The beef stew, corn stew, and apple dessert for lunch were pretty amazing cooked over the open fire! We are so fortunate to be able to continue offering programming such as this at the middle school level! We didn’t ask, but it’s easy to assume students would chose to have an interactive, outdoor classroom every day if the week if given the opportunity. #cardinalpride #HCScardinals

As our community mourns the loss of a Highland Community Schools alumni it’s safe to say Levi Linscheid left a lasting impression everywhere he went. As we browsed through yearbooks his contagious smile was always one of the first to pop off the pages. His involvement in athletics, clubs and organizations showed that he wasn’t just here because he had to be, he was a proud member because he chose to make the most out of every opportunity possible. There is no doubt in our mind that the legacy to “Live Like Levi” will have a positive impression on the youth in our community for years to come. #highlandthrowback #throwbackthursday

On Thursday, September 19, 2019 the Highland Athletic Hall of Fame inducted three new members. The members of the class of 2019 included: Joe Esser, Tony Caster and J.J. Linscheid. The list of accomplishments these three individuals have is extensive, but perhaps most impressive is how humble they were in accepting this honor. A common thread through each of their speeches was how much effort it took from their parents, teammates, and community members to help them achieve such athletic accomplishments. It was only through teamwork and dedication they are where they are today. Congrats, again, 2019 Hall of Fame Inductees! #cardinalpride #HCScardinals Event Photos can be found here: https://www.highland.k12.wi.us/o/highland/page/photographs

Over the summer months the high school business lab underwent a complete remodel. The space, which used to be made up of built in work spaces, is now a multi-purpose classroom where students can gather and collaborate on various projects. The room still houses the same amount of technology, but the space is organized in a much more inviting, business like matter. This isn't the only high school flexible seating classroom this year. Ms. Weber, Spanish and AP English, teacher also transformed her classroom into a non-traditional, deskless learning space. We're excited to see how these learning environments benefit our high school level students.
